Super Visa insurance requirements in 2026
If you are inviting parents or grandparents to visit your family in Mississauga, choose insurance that meets the current IRCC requirements. A Super Visa insurance policy must provide at least CAD $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, be valid for at least one year from the date of entry, and include health care, hospitalization and repatriation. A quote alone does not satisfy the insurance requirement. IRCC permits proof of a paid policy or an instalment arrangement with a deposit, subject to its requirements.
Since January 2025, qualifying insurance from an eligible insurer outside Canada may also satisfy IRCC rules, but only where its authorization and issuance meet the specified criteria. Not every foreign policy qualifies. Check the policy issuer and terms before submitting the application.
- Applicant's date of birth and intended entry date
- One-year validity and at least $100,000 eligible emergency medical coverage
- Hospitalization, health care and repatriation included
- Deductible, waiting period and pre-existing condition clauses reviewed
- Premium payment / deposit documentation acceptable to IRCC
How much does Super Visa insurance cost in Mississauga?
Rates vary by age, insurer, policy term, deductible, medical history, plan type and coverage limit. A 55-year-old parent and a 77-year-old grandparent will usually have different premiums. Choosing a deductible can change the quote, but also changes how much you pay toward a covered claim. Use the quote form above for available current options; the figures shown by an insurer at checkout and the issued policy govern.
Interested in instalments? Some carriers offer monthly payment arrangements, but eligibility, administration fees, deposit amounts and cancellation terms differ. Do not assume every monthly arrangement is compliant: confirm what proof of insurance and payment is needed for the Super Visa application. Read our detailed Super Visa cost guide.
Pre-existing conditions: understand the stability clause
Diabetes, hypertension or heart conditions do not automatically mean every option is unavailable. However, some policies exclude conditions entirely, while others may cover eligible stable pre-existing conditions under clearly defined stability periods and exclusions. A recent medication adjustment, symptom, investigation or specialist consultation could matter. Complete the medical questions accurately and compare the wording, not just the premium.
What happens if the visa is refused or your travel plans change?
Refund terms depend on the insurer and whether the policy has started, a claim has been submitted or travel has occurred. Some insurers provide a refund after documented visa refusal, subject to policy conditions. Never treat all plans as providing an unconditional full refund. Ask us to review the applicable policy's cancellation and refund provisions.

Super Visa insurance FAQs
What is the minimum Super Visa medical insurance amount?
IRCC requires at least CAD $100,000 in qualifying emergency medical insurance. The policy must also meet duration, benefit and issuer conditions. Review the official checklist.
Can I use monthly payments for Super Visa insurance?
IRCC accepts a qualifying insurance policy paid in full or by instalments with a deposit. The arrangement and proof of coverage must satisfy current rules. Ask the insurer to confirm the available payment plan and documentary requirements.
Is a foreign insurer acceptable?
Only qualifying foreign insurers meeting IRCC and OSFI-related criteria are eligible. An ordinary foreign travel plan does not automatically qualify. See the government explanation.
Does the policy need to cover the full five-year visit?
IRCC requires an initial qualifying policy valid for at least one year from entry, and valid coverage must be maintained when entering Canada. Renew coverage as necessary during the visit.
Can people with diabetes or blood pressure issues apply?
Plan eligibility and possible coverage of existing conditions depend on the carrier, medical stability periods, exclusions and declarations. Review available policies and medical questions carefully.
Have Super Visa income rules changed in 2026?
Yes. IRCC announced changes effective March 31, 2026, including flexibility for the host income assessment. Insurance eligibility is separate from income eligibility. Read the IRCC update.
